Category: Cell Phone Talk
Hello,
My father has low vision and is looking into getting a new phone. He currently has an android and would like another one. He hasn't figured out how to use it all that well and would like me to help him. So I need to find a phone that works good for low vision and does well with speech, anyone have any suggestions? Price is a factor, he's looking for something on the cheaper side. . Also I have no idea how to use an android device so any help finding the right apps and perhaps a how to podcast would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
That is hard to mix the two and go low priced unless you take a contract.
I'm not an Android person, so you'll need better help on that score.
But here's the thing. All cellular providers also offer store training, or help.
When you buy a phone, you get to ask them anything you want.
So, I'd go to a store, decide the best one for the vision, choose it, then make an appointment for help.
Take it home, and decide all the questions.
I also don't think this will be hard. The newer models have on screen prompts or help, so for the seeing, the learning curve is easy.
You can get the clerk to set the screen correctly for the vision, then after that, it's not hard.
Does it absolutely have to be an Android phone? The older iPhones tend to be
available cheaply on contracts now, and if you happen to be familiar with iOS,
you might be able to offer more help.
He is planning on having the staff show him how to work his phone but he's worried he will forget and need help so he asked me what phone to get that we both can work. He hasn't tried a iPhone but when I gave him my iTouch he didn't care for it.
Thank you for the suggestions.
I would look for a galaxy s4 on e-bay. don't ever, ever, ever, go cheep with an android phone. The Motorola G is a low cost budget phone as well. Second, take this with a grain of salt, do not teach android unless your ready to for get everything you know about an IPhone and be willing to learn another way of navigating around on a touch screen. Just keep in mind android is not IOS nor does it behave like IOS. Okay take my advice with a grain of salt. If I must show my proof of android knowledge just go look at the cell phone board. Ending this post, its doable, its quite accessible but do not mess with anything lower then 4.3 jelly bean, you want a kitcat device or a device that will get updates so you can get lolly pop.
Thank you, he's going with the Motorola G. Could you tell me what apps I need him to put on it?
Thanks
blind droid walit "a money idinifier" for the home screen nova launcher but this is my person suggestion and what all my device have as a home screen. accessible Text editer and on my android app board there is more.
Keep in mind just because its not an IPhone does not mean there arnt a lot for blind related apps, so do check my board relating to android apps.
